Springtime is in full swing, and right now, gardeners who have love their spring flowers are reaping the rewards of months of preparation.
The beautiful garden we featured on Prime News was in Lismore and it was absolutely bursting with bloom.
There was wall-to-wall colour everywhere you turned. Beautiful roses, exceptional snapdragons, gerberas with enormous blooms, Dianthus in many shades and hardy fragrant Heliotrope.
The interesting shrub with the red flowers was Euphorbia fulgens. Not one you see every day… but if you do, grab a cutting because it’s very easy to strike and you’ll be rewarded with colourful arching stems that make a wonderful addition to flower arrangements.
But it’s not all flowers. Foliage provides terrific colour too. There were two Japanese Maples growing in this garden. The owners were told they would never grow in northern NSW. But determined, they found the right spot - a cool east facing position - where they thrive.
So how do you go about creating a spring garden like this? Well the owners use a lot of cow manure to improve the soil. They start planting in May each year, but more interestingly, they always plant by the different phases of the moon, which they find always guarantees success.
They also recommend that gardeners keen to learn more should join their local garden club. Clubs are full of friendly people always willing to pass on their wealth of valuable knowledge and experience.
