New Plants on the Scene

The thing I love about visiting nurseries wherever I go is that you never know what you might find… and more often than not, you’ll discover something new.

Here’s a bunch of interesting plants that have really started to take off. They’re a type of Euphorbia, and they certainly look unusual, but the thing that gardeners love about them is that they’re just so incredibly drought hardy - they rarely need water - and what’s more they don’t stop flowering. They suit a wide range of garden styles too - arid, cottage even tropical.

Cordylines have become very popular, especially the strappy leaf forms. This is a brand new form called ‘Pink Sensation’ and it features brilliant variegated pink leaves that shoot out of the central stem. It’ll grow to 2m quite easily in full sun to part shade making a terrific feature in a pot or spotted throughout a garden as a spiky accent plant.

Now here’s one you going to see a lot more of. Florists have enjoyed it for years as a filler for flower arrangements. It’s actually a native plant they’ve called Didgery Sticks. The stems are a lovely vibrant green and they grow to around 80cm long. It makes an outstanding potted feature and it likes a bit of extra moisture so it’s ideal for boggy areas. You can even submerge it - pot and all into a pond or water feature to create an interesting vertical effect.

There’s always something new to discover at your local garden centre so make sure you head down there soon.
