Spuds, spuds, glorious spuds. All over the world, we just can’t seem to get enough of them. Just as well they’re good for us because they’re packed with fibre and goodness.
They’re fun and easy to grow too and August is a top time to get a crop in the ground. Check out how easy it is with this really simple planting method.
Start off by finding yourself a sunny spot, get rid of all the weeds and turn the soil over really well. Level it all out and you’re ready to plant.
I like to plant what we call ‘seed potatoes’. They’re certified virus free so that means you don’t introduce any nasties to your soil and you’re guaranteed a bumper crop. Ask for them at your local garden centre.
To plant, you can simply lay your seed potatoes directly on the surface - 50cm apart - in rows about 80 cm’s apart. Cover the whole area with straw, sprinkle some blood and bone on top and you’re done.
The potato sprouts will gradually work their way through the straw. All you have to do is keep the area moist and add some more straw as it breaks down.
So when do you harvest? Well you can start when the plants are in flower. The great thing with this method is you can pull away the straw at any time, and nick a few spuds for the pot and you don’t have to dig because they’ll just be sitting on the soils surface.
It really is that easy and I know you’ll love it so why don't you give it a try.
