Kids in the Garden
Are your kids getting bored these school holidays? Have you run out of ideas to keep them occupied?

Well here are a few simple activities that may just help to get them out and into the garden.

First up, give the kids what they need to start their own little patch. Hand them a few big containers - it could be pots or even a polystyrene box.

On the segment we shot for Prime News, we made a simple ‘no dig’ garden with some old car tyres. Here’s how you can go about it.

Find a sunny spot, lay down a few sheets of newspaper then stack a couple of tyres on top. Fill them up with compost or potting mix and you're ready to plant. We planting our garden with a punnet of colourful petunias, which only cost around $2.00. With a little slow release fertiliser and a regular drink, they’ll make a wonderful show in no time.

But here’s another idea the kids might like to try. You can use some old motorcycle tyres to make a simple garden pond.

Stack a few tyres and line the inside with a plastic pond liner - you can pick that up at your local pond supply store. Place another tyre on top, trim the liner to shape and you’re ready to fill your pond with water.

You can put some rocks and water plants in your pond, even gold fish. The kids will have a great time looking after them.
